Husky is a catch-all name for northern sled dogs. In Knoxville it most often means a Siberian Husky or a Siberian mix, though the label also covers the Alaskan husky, a mixed racing type, and dogs with some Alaskan Malamute in them. Most weigh 35 to 70 pounds and share erect ears, a brush tail, a thick double coat and sometimes blue or mismatched eyes.
Many are friendly and playful, but also independent, vocal and quick to dig, chase small animals or slip out of a gate. Shedding is heavy, and the coat sheds hardest in spring and fall. Huskies need daily running, secure fencing and company. Many reach shelters as young adults whose energy outpaced their first home, so adopters who plan for the workload tend to do well. Mixes vary from dog to dog.
