Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from central Turkey, where dogs of this type have protected flocks from wolves for thousands of years. They stay with the animals and decide for themselves when to step in. Adults are big and rangy, often 80 to 150 pounds, with a short to medium coat, usually fawn with a dark mask, over a thick undercoat.
At home they tend to be calm, watchful and loyal, but the guarding instinct stays strong. Many are wary of visitors, protective of their territory and inclined to wander if a fence allows it. They mature slowly, think for themselves and respond poorly to harsh handling. In Charleston, that means planning for secure fencing, steady socialization and a dog whose judgment may differ from yours.
