The American Bully is a young American companion breed, developed in the 1980s and 1990s mainly from the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier, with bulldog breeds mixed in. The UKC recognizes it, though the AKC does not. Sizes run from compact Pockets to tall, heavy XLs, in nearly every color, with a short coat that sheds lightly to moderately.
Many Bullies are affectionate, eager to please and happiest leaning on their people. In Charleston, that suits a home with a steady routine, but their strength means leash manners and slow introductions to other dogs matter. Heavier dogs also cope poorly with humid heat, so a lean build and a cool indoor spot count for a lot. Each dog differs, and training and history shape behavior more than looks do.
