The Boerboel is South Africa's farm guardian, a massive mastiff type whose name means roughly "farmer's bulldog" in Afrikaans. Settlers' mastiff and bulldog dogs were bred over generations to protect isolated homesteads from predators and intruders, and that job shaped a powerful, agile dog with a blocky head, short sleek coat and a confident, watchful presence. The AKC added the breed to its Working Group in 2015.
With family, many Boerboels are calm, affectionate and deeply attached, but they tend to be territorial and wary of strangers, and some do not tolerate other dogs. A grown male can outweigh his handler, so early socialization, steady reward-based training and experienced, confident handling matter far more than with most breeds. Adopters should also plan for a large food bill, joint care and a home where visitors are introduced thoughtfully.
