The Belgian Malinois is the short-coated, fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, a herding breed that took shape around Mechelen, Belgium, in the 1890s. Lean, square and athletic, with a black mask and erect ears, it has a hard double coat that sheds heavily twice a year. Malinois are prized as police, military and detection dogs, which says plenty about their drive and focus.
For a Philly adopter, that means planning for work, not just walks. Malinois tend to bond closely with their people, stay watchful with strangers and chase anything that moves, which matters on sidewalks full of bikes and cars. Dogs vary, and some are calmer than others, but most do best with an experienced owner who enjoys training every day.
