The Australian Shepherd took shape on ranches in the American West during the 1800s, not in Australia, from Spanish and Basque herding dogs crossed with collie types. Aussies are medium-sized, usually 40 to 65 pounds, with a weather-resistant double coat in merle, black or red, often with white and copper trim and eyes that can be blue, brown or a mix.
Many Aussies are intelligent, devoted and tireless, bonding closely with family while staying reserved with strangers. Heavy seasonal shedding means regular brushing, and without daily exercise and mental work the herding drive can turn into nipping at heels, chewing or barking. Dogs vary, but most suit active adopters who like training, which is worth weighing against Philly's tight rowhouse blocks.
