The Australian Kelpie is a lean, prick-eared herding dog developed in Australia in the 1870s from Scottish working collies to move Merino sheep across hot, open country. Kelpies are known for their stamina, toughness and heat tolerance. Today there are show Kelpies bred to a written standard and Working Kelpies selected purely for ability, so looks and energy levels vary.
Most Kelpies are quick learners, loyal to their people and reserved with strangers. The drive that makes them superb workers can make pet life tricky: a Kelpie without a job may nip at heels, chase bikes, bark or invent destructive projects. In a dense city like Philly, they do best with adopters who enjoy daily running, training or dog sports.
