The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle sizes, a square, athletic dog with a long muzzle and a dense, curly coat in solid colors from black and white to apricot and silver. The breed began as a water retriever, and many Standards still love to swim and fetch despite the show-ring clips.
Standards are known as clever, sensitive and playful well into adulthood, and they usually bond closely with their people. The low-shedding coat never stops growing, so plan on professional grooming every six to eight weeks plus brushing at home several times a week. In Eugene, that means a dog who can enjoy outdoor adventures as long as someone has time to dry and detangle afterward. Like any breed, each Standard varies in energy and confidence.
