The Hamiltonstovare comes from Sweden, where Count Adolf Hamilton, founder of the Swedish Kennel Club, showed the first ones in 1886. It was developed to trail hare and fox alone rather than in a pack, and it calls out on the trail so hunters can follow. It's a medium-sized, athletic hound, usually 50 to 60 pounds, with a close-lying coat in a black saddle, tan and white.
Most are friendly and good-natured with people and often with other dogs, but the nose leads. In OKC that means daily miles, patient training and a secure fence, since a fresh scent can override recall. Because the breed is rare outside Scandinavia, adopters are more likely to meet a hound with similar traits than a purebred, so watching the listings here is the best way to catch one.
