Hunters developed the American Water Spaniel in the lake country of Wisconsin and Minnesota during the 1800s as a compact all-rounder that could ride in a small boat, flush upland birds and retrieve ducks from cold water. It's Wisconsin's state dog and still uncommon. Expect a medium dog of 25 to 45 pounds with a dense, curly coat in liver, brown or dark chocolate.
Many are devoted to their families, a little reserved with strangers, clever and sensitive, and they often stay youthful until two or three years old. Gentle, consistent training works best. In OKC, that means planning for daily exercise, regular brushing and a calm plan for storm season, since some are vocal and may react to thunder or distant fireworks from neighboring areas.
