The Alaskan Malamute is a heavy-boned Arctic freight dog, developed by the Mahlemiut Inupiaq people of northwestern Alaska to haul loads over long distances. Most adults weigh 70 to 95 pounds, with a thick double coat, snowshoe feet and a plumed tail carried over the back.
In OKC, that heritage shows up in a few ways. Malamutes are usually friendly with people but independent, so training takes patience. The coat sheds heavily and is built for snow, which makes summer cooling and regular brushing part of the job. Many also dig, howl and chase small animals, so a sturdy fence and a secure leash matter on the city's lake trails. Dogs vary, and a Malamute mix may have different needs.
