Few breeds look as unusual as the Chinese Crested Dog. The hairless variety has soft, bare skin with silky hair on the head, feet and tail, while the Powderpuff is covered in a long, fine coat, and both can be born in the same litter. Despite the name, the breed's origins are uncertain and probably lie outside China; the modern dog was standardized in the United States and recognized by the AKC in 1991.
Cresteds are toy companions, usually under 13 pounds, and many are cuddly, playful and closely attached to one or two people. Some are shy with strangers and sensitive to harsh handling, so gentle socialization matters. Care looks different from most dogs: hairless Cresteds need sun protection, skin care and warmth in cold weather, while Powderpuffs need regular brushing to stay free of mats.
