The Standard Poodle began as a German water retriever, and the curly coat, long muzzle and athletic build still reflect that job. It's the largest of the three Poodle sizes, a square dog that stands well over 15 inches at the shoulder and usually weighs 40 to 70 pounds. Coats come in solid colors, from black and white to apricot and silver.
Standards are quick learners that usually bond closely with their people and can be reserved with strangers. The coat sheds little but never stops growing, so grooming is an ongoing commitment. In Dayton, that means a routine of river-trail walks, training games and clippers kept busy through muddy springs and salty winters. Dogs vary, so a Standard's energy and confidence are worth watching in person.
