The Malinois (say MAL-in-wah) is the short-coated fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, named for the Belgian city of Mechelen, or Malines in French. Most registries treat the four Belgian varieties as one breed, while the AKC lists them separately. Malinois are lean, square dogs with a fawn-to-mahogany coat, a black mask, erect ears and a weather-resistant double coat that sheds heavily twice a year.
Originally herding dogs, Malinois are now best known for police, military and detection work, and that drive comes home with them. They're alert, loyal and often reserved with strangers, with a strong chase instinct. Columbus has plenty of places to burn off energy, from greenway trails to fenced dog parks, but a Malinois also needs daily training and a person who enjoys providing it. Dogs vary, so match the dog in front of you to your routine.
