The Mountain Cur is a stocky, short-coated working dog from the Appalachian hills, where pioneer families used it to tree squirrels and raccoons, hold larger game and guard the homestead. Colors run from brindle and black to yellow, blue and brown, and many have a natural bobtail. The United Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1998, and the AKC's Foundation Stock Service added it in 2017.
Mountain Curs are loyal, courageous and smart, and most want a job to do. Expect strong prey drive, plenty of stamina and, in some dogs, wariness of unfamiliar dogs. Cleveland's trails and snowy winters suit a dog with grit, but leash rules mean a Cur needs a secure yard and consistent training, because chasing instincts can override recall. Dogs vary, so judge the dog in front of you, not just the breed.
