The Silky Terrier was developed in Sydney, Australia, around 1900 from Yorkshire Terriers and Australian Terriers. It stands 9 to 10 inches tall and weighs roughly 8 to 12 pounds, with a wedge-shaped head, small upright ears and a long, glossy blue-and-tan coat parted down the back. Puppies are born darker, and the blue usually develops over the first year or more.
Underneath the silky hair is a working terrier. Many Silkies are curious, affectionate and noisy, and they chase and dig more than most toy dogs. In Rochester, that means a secure harness, a fenced spot for off-leash play and brushing that keeps the coat from matting after wet or snowy walks. Dogs vary, so a Silky's own personality matters more than the breed description.
