The Pomeranian is a spitz-type toy descended from much larger German Spitz dogs and named for the Baltic region of Pomerania. Queen Victoria's fondness for small, colorful Poms helped shrink the breed to the few pounds seen today, usually 3 to 7, though plenty of adult Poms run heavier. The standoff double coat, plumed tail and foxy face are the look most people recognize.
Many Pomeranians are bold, curious and sure they're much bigger than they are. They tend to bond tightly with their people, announce every sound and enjoy learning tricks. In Rochester, that means a dog who wants to stay close through a long winter indoors, so plan on regular brushing, dental care, barking training and protection from falls and larger dogs.
