The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three AKC Poodle varieties and began as a water retriever, probably in Germany, where the name comes from a word for splashing. Under the show-clip image is a square, athletic dog over 15 inches at the shoulder, usually 40 to 70 pounds, with a dense curly coat in solid colors from black and white to apricot and silver.
Standards are bright, sensitive and people-focused, and many stay playful well into adulthood. Dogs vary, but most do best with training, daily activity and a household that's around. The coat sheds very little, but it keeps growing and mats without regular brushing, so grooming is part of the routine from the start.
