Despite the name, Great Danes are German, descended from the boar hounds of German nobility, mastiff and greyhound-type crosses built to hold wild boar and run it down. They stand 28 to 32 inches or more at the shoulder, weigh roughly 110 to 175 pounds, and have a short, smooth coat that sheds moderately and needs little grooming.
Many Danes are calm and affectionate indoors, happy to lean on their people or sprawl across a couch. Size still shapes daily life, from food bills to car space, and lifespans often run seven to ten years. In Binghamton, that means a dog that's easy on grooming but needs a warm bed through long winters, a roomy vehicle, and a plan for bloat and heart care.
