Cattle Dog is a shelter label more than a single breed. Most dogs listed this way are Australian Cattle Dogs, often called Blue or Red Heelers, or mixes with one, though Texas Heelers and crosses with Border Collies or Labs turn up too. The Australian Cattle Dog was developed in nineteenth-century Australia to drive cattle over long distances by nipping at their heels.
Most are medium-sized, muscular and short-coated, around 30 to 50 pounds, with a dense double coat that sheds moderately. They're sharp, independent and often devoted to one person, and many are reserved with strangers. That coat copes well with a Northeastern climate, but a heeler's brain needs as much exercise as its legs. Mixes vary in size, coat and energy, so judge each dog by how it actually behaves rather than by the label.
