Shepherds in the Pyrenees mountains bred these big white dogs to stay with flocks through the night and face down wolves and bears without waiting for instructions. That history shows in the dog you meet today: a giant, thickly coated guardian with a plumed tail, double rear dewclaws and a calm, watchful manner. The weather-resistant double coat sheds dirt well, which helps in Reno's dust.
Many Pyrs are gentle and deeply attached to their families, but they think for themselves and can treat a command as a suggestion. Expect heavy seasonal shedding, nighttime barking and a habit of testing fences. Pyrs and Pyr mixes turn up often in shelters, and each dog's personality varies, so look at the dog in front of you rather than the breed label.
