The Basenji is an ancient hunting breed from Central Africa, where village hunters relied on it to find small game and drive it into nets. Instead of barking, it yodels and makes a sound often called a baroo. Basenjis are lean and tidy, with a wrinkled forehead, upright ears, a tightly curled tail and a short coat that sheds little. They groom themselves much like cats.
Temperament varies from dog to dog, but many Basenjis are affectionate with their people, reserved with strangers and independent about training. A strong chase drive, a talent for climbing fences and a habit of chewing mean they need exercise, puzzle toys and secure spaces. In Las Vegas, that also means planning outings around the desert heat and watching gates and doors closely.
