The American Eskimo Dog has no ties to Arctic sled dogs. It descends from white German Spitz dogs that immigrants brought to the United States in the early 1900s, and the name changed during World War I. Eskies later became circus performers, and that showmanship shows in how quickly many of them pick up tricks. They come in toy, miniature and standard sizes, from roughly 6 to 35 pounds.
The thick white double coat is the signature feature, and it sheds heavily, with a bigger blowout once or twice a year. Plan on regular brushing and a vacuum that gets used. Eskies are alert watchdogs that bark readily and can be reserved with strangers, so early socialization and enough company matter. Dogs vary, and each Eskie's own personality counts for more than the breed label.
