The Belgian Shepherd comes in four varieties: the long black Groenendael (the AKC's Belgian Sheepdog), the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. They share a square, elegant build, upright ears and a proud head carriage. Most dogs labeled Belgian Shepherd in shelters are Malinois or Malinois mixes, so coat length and energy can vary quite a bit.
These are watchful, devoted herding dogs with a strong drive to work, which is why they became police, military and sport dogs. In Newark, that drive needs an outlet beyond a quick block walk: daily runs, training and mental games. In an engaged home many are affectionate and responsive, but few settle for a sedentary life.
