The Dachshund was developed in Germany to follow badgers underground, which explains the long body, short legs and a bark that sounds like it belongs to a much bigger dog. It comes in standard and miniature sizes and in smooth, longhaired and wirehaired coats, so two Dachshunds can look quite different. Many are curious, loyal and funny, with a stubborn streak.
That hunting background shows up in Hamilton backyards as digging, chasing squirrels and barking at whatever passes the fence. Their body shape means spine care matters for life: keep the dog lean, limit jumping and use ramps. Adopters who enjoy a big personality in a small dog, and who can be patient with house-training, often find a Dachshund great company.
