Named for the French word for cotton and the Madagascar port of Tuléar, the Coton de Tulear is a small, sturdy companion dog with a soft, fluffy white coat. Its ancestors likely reached the island by ship centuries ago, and the breed became associated with Madagascar's nobility, earning the nickname Royal Dog of Madagascar. The AKC recognized it in 2014, placing it in the Non-Sporting Group.
Many Cotons are cheerful, playful and devoted, often following their favorite person from room to room and clowning for attention. They tend to get along with children, other dogs and visitors, and their modest exercise needs suit many households. The tradeoffs are a coat that mats quickly without frequent brushing, a tendency to bark or fret when left alone, and the patience small dogs sometimes require during house-training.
