The Malinois is the short-coated fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, named for the Mechelen region of Belgium. The AKC lists it as its own herding breed, while most other registries group it with the Groenendael, Tervuren and Laekenois. It's a lean, square dog with a black mask, erect ears and a weather-resistant double coat that sheds heavily twice a year.
Police and military units value Malinois for their speed, focus and drive, and that intensity comes home with them. Many are deeply devoted and sensitive, but a bored dog can turn destructive or reactive. They suit experienced, active adopters who can build training, play and structure into every day. Dogs vary, and a Malinois in a shelter may be a mix, so look at the dog in front of you.
