Hound isn't one breed but a label for hunting-dog ancestry. Scent hounds such as Beagles, Coonhounds and Foxhounds follow a trail by nose, while sighthounds such as Greyhounds and Whippets chase by sight. Hounds on adoption listings are usually scent-hound mixes, anywhere from about 20 to 70 pounds, with short coats, long ears and a loud voice. Many live 10 to 14 years.
Most are friendly with people and other dogs, and they're independent thinkers who treat training as a negotiation. In Lincoln, that means a well-fitted harness, a sturdy leash and patience on trails full of rabbits, deer and squirrels. Because ancestry varies so much, size, energy and voice differ from one hound to the next, so read each listing closely.
