The Great Pyrenees is a giant livestock guardian from the mountains between France and Spain, bred to stay with a flock and decide for itself when something is a threat. Adults usually weigh 85 to 120 pounds, with a thick white double coat, sometimes marked with gray, tan or badger shading, and double dewclaws on each hind leg.
That history shows up in everyday life. Pyrs tend to be calm and affectionate at home, but many are wary of strangers, bark when they sense something at night, and wander if a fence has a weak spot. Expect heavy shedding, especially in spring, and a dog that treats training as a suggestion. Pyrs and Pyr mixes are common in shelters, though each dog differs.
