Coonhound is a family of American scent hounds, not one breed. Black and Tans, Redbones, Blueticks, Treeing Walkers, American English and Plotts were all developed to trail raccoons at night and bay at the base of the tree. A dog listed simply as a Coonhound is often one of these or a mix, with a short, smooth coat and long, drooping ears.
In a city of close-set houses and shared walls, the voice matters as much as the nose. Coonhounds are usually sociable and relaxed indoors, yet a scent can override everything outside, so a leash and a secure fence are essential. Sizes run from roughly 45 to 100 pounds, so judge each dog's build and energy rather than the label.
