Black Mouth Curs were developed in the rural South as all-purpose farm dogs that treed squirrels and raccoons, bayed hogs, moved cattle and guarded the homestead. Their exact roots in Tennessee or Mississippi are debated, and the breed is often linked to the dog in Old Yeller. Most have a short yellow, red, fawn or brindle coat and the dark muzzle behind the name.
That working history explains the modern dog: athletic, muscular, driven and loyal, often wary of strangers and sensitive to harsh handling. The short coat sheds moderately year-round and needs only occasional brushing. Dogs vary, so think about the energy and temperament of the particular dog, not just the breed, when deciding if a cur fits your home.
