Coonhound is not a single breed but a family of American scent hounds developed to trail raccoons by night and hold them up a tree until hunters arrive. Six breeds carry the name: the Black and Tan, Redbone, Bluetick, Treeing Walker, American English and Plott. Dogs listed simply as Coonhound in shelters are often one of these or a mix, and most share a short, easy coat, long drooping ears, a powerful nose and a loud, booming bay.
At home many coonhounds are mellow, sociable and fond of the sofa, yet outdoors their noses can override everything else. Expect a dog that needs a leash, a tall solid fence, daily exercise and patient, food-motivated training. Sizes range from about 45 pounds to more than 100, so an individual dog's build and energy matter more than the label.
