Husky is a catch-all name for northern sled dogs. In Rochester it usually means a Siberian Husky or a Siberian mix, though some are Alaskan huskies or carry Alaskan Malamute ancestry. Most weigh 35 to 70 pounds and share erect ears, a thick double coat and a brush tail, often with blue or mismatched eyes.
Huskies are sociable, playful and independent, and they howl more than they bark. Prey drive, digging and escaping are common, so a secure fence and a leash matter more than many first-time owners expect. The coat sheds heavily, with a big blowout twice a year. Because mixes vary, a dog's size, stamina and temperament can differ from the typical Siberian, so spend time with a dog before deciding.
