The German Shepherd Dog was developed in Germany around 1900 by Max von Stephanitz, who wanted a capable, intelligent herding dog. The result is a strong, agile dog, longer than tall, with erect ears, a bushy tail and a dense double coat that sheds heavily, with bigger seasonal blowouts. Most stand 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh 50 to 90 pounds.
The same working drive that police and search teams value needs an outlet year-round. Many Shepherds are devoted to their families and reserved with strangers, and some become overprotective without socialization, so a calm, confident adult is often a sound match. Dogs vary, so spend time with the dog in front of you rather than relying on the breed label.
