The Australian Kelpie is a lean, prick-eared herder developed in the 1870s from Scottish working collies to move Merino sheep across hot, rough Australian country. Most weigh 25 to 45 pounds, with a short, weather-resistant double coat in black, red, blue or tan, often with tan markings. Stamina and toughness are what the breed is known for.
Kelpies are alert, quick to learn and loyal to their people, and often reserved with strangers. Without a job, a Kelpie may herd children, chase bikes, bark or invent destructive projects. In Minneapolis, that means daily trail or lake-loop outings and a training class or two. The coat sheds moderately, with heavier seasonal sheds that regular brushing handles. Kelpies vary, so spend time with the dog in front of you.
