Hunters in Wisconsin's lake country developed the American Water Spaniel in the nineteenth century, wanting a compact dog that could ride in a small boat, flush birds and retrieve from cold water. It's Wisconsin's state dog and still fairly uncommon. The dense, curly or wavy coat comes in liver, brown or chocolate and sheds water well.
Most stand 15 to 18 inches tall and weigh 25 to 45 pounds. They're often devoted to their family, reserved with strangers, clever and sensitive, and some are vocal. Expect daily exercise, regular brushing, ear care and gentle, consistent training. That coat suits Minneapolis winters, though dogs of the breed vary in how they handle cold and how much energy they have.
