A Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, not a standardized breed, so size, coat and personality vary more than in any purebred. The cross became widely popular in the 1990s as an alternative to the Labradoodle. Standard Goldendoodles from Standard Poodle parents often weigh 50 to 80 pounds or more, while those with Miniature Poodle parents can be well under 35 pounds. Coats range from straight and shaggy to loose waves or tight curls.
Many Goldendoodles inherit the Golden's friendliness and the Poodle's sharp mind, making them social, playful companions that enjoy training and people. They also inherit real needs: daily exercise, attention, and frequent coat care, since wavy and curly coats mat easily and usually need professional grooming. Shedding varies widely, and no Goldendoodle is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic.
