The Malinois is the short-haired fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, a herding dog developed in Belgium in the 1890s and named for the Mechelen region. Lean, square and athletic, it has a fawn-to-mahogany coat with a black mask and erect ears. The weather-resistant double coat handles Michigan cold well and sheds heavily twice a year.
Malinois are prized by police and military units for their drive, speed and focus, and those same traits make them demanding pets. Many are devoted and sensitive, but a bored dog can turn frantic or destructive. In Kalamazoo they suit experienced, active adopters who can offer training and structure every day. Dogs vary, so spend time with a Malinois before deciding.
