Anatolian Shepherds come from the central plateau of Turkey, where flock-guarding dogs of this type have protected sheep and goats from predators for centuries. They live alongside the animals they guard and make their own calls about threats. Adults are big and rangy, usually 80 to 150 pounds, with a short to medium fawn coat and dark mask, though other colors occur.
In a city like Baltimore, that background shows up in small ways: watching the street from a front window, barking at night noises, and sizing up visitors before relaxing. Most are calm and loyal with their own family, but they mature slowly, think independently and respond poorly to harsh handling. Plan on patient socialization, a securely fenced yard and a heavy seasonal shed.
