The American Bully was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, mainly from the American Pit Bull Terrier with American Staffordshire Terrier and bulldog breeds mixed in. The aim was a companion with a heavier, more muscular frame and a people-loving nature. Varieties run from compact Pockets to tall XLs, in nearly any color, with a short coat that needs only light brushing.
Many Bullies are affectionate and eager to please, but their strength makes early training and leash manners important, and tolerance of other dogs varies. In Baltimore, where city parks require a six-foot leash and rowhouse sidewalks are narrow, a Bully that walks politely matters. Heavier dogs overheat easily, and a lean build protects the joints. Check lease and insurance rules before bringing one home.
