The English Bulldog, listed by the AKC simply as the Bulldog, descends from the extinct Old English Bulldog, once used in bull-baiting until England outlawed the sport in 1835. The breed was remade into a companion that kept the massive head, loose wrinkled skin and low, wide body but had a far gentler disposition. Most weigh 40 to 55 pounds and have a short, smooth coat that sheds moderately.
Many Bulldogs are calm, affectionate and good-humored, happy with short walks and long naps near their people, though some are stubborn. The flat face brings trade-offs: breathing trouble, poor heat tolerance, skin-fold infections and joint problems are common, so vet bills can be significant. In Shreveport, that means planning around heat and humidity, keeping weight down, and finding a vet who knows flat-faced breeds.
