The Akbash is a white livestock guardian from western Turkey, where shepherds relied on it to live with their flocks and drive off wolves. The name akbaş means white head. Dogs came to the US in the 1970s and later worked in a federal predator control program. Tall, lean and long-legged, the Akbash blends mastiff power with sighthound speed, and its double coat comes in medium and long lengths.
At home, many Akbash dogs are calm, quiet and gentle with their own people and animals, yet aloof toward strangers and protective around unfamiliar dogs. They think for themselves, mature slowly and tend to patrol their territory. In a city like NOLA, that means secure fencing, early socialization and patient, consistent training from an owner who understands guardian breeds. Each dog varies, so temperament and energy differ from one Akbash to the next.
