The Belgian Shepherd began in Belgium in the 1890s, when local herding dogs were sorted into four coat varieties. The Malinois, the short-haired fawn dog with a black mask, is the one most adopters meet. The AKC lists it as its own breed, while most registries count all four varieties as one. It's a lean, square dog, usually 40 to 80 pounds, with a weather-resistant double coat that sheds heavily twice a year.
Malinois are widely used in police and military work because of their speed, focus and drive, and those same traits shape life at home. Many are devoted and sensitive, and some are reserved with strangers. In Louisville they fit best with experienced, active people who can offer training, play and structure every day. Dogs vary, so spend time getting to know the dog in front of you.
