The Basset Hound is a low-slung scent hound of French origin, later refined in Britain into the heavier build seen today. Short legs, long ears and loose skin give it a sad-eyed look, and the ears help stir scent up toward a nose that ranks just behind the Bloodhound's. Adults usually weigh 40 to 65 pounds, which surprises people who expect a small dog.
Bassets are typically mellow, sociable and tolerant, though many are stubborn and some bay loudly. In Louisville, a Basset on a Cherokee Park path or a Crescent Hill sidewalk will follow its nose, so a sturdy leash matters. Plan on ear cleaning, nail trims, portion control and a home with few stairs. Dogs vary, so each Basset's own history and personality matter more than the breed label.
