The American Staffordshire Terrier descends from bull-and-terrier dogs brought over from Britain in the 1800s, and the AKC first recognized the breed in 1936. AmStaffs are stocky, muscular, medium-sized dogs, usually 40 to 70 pounds, with a broad head, pronounced cheeks and a short glossy coat in nearly any color. That coat takes little work: a weekly brush and a bath every month or two.
Many AmStaffs are confident, goofy and devoted to their families, and some are selective with other dogs even when well socialized. Training and leash manners matter for a dog this strong. In Wichita, the breed also falls under the city's pit bull ordinance, so factor in its spay/neuter and microchip rules. Dogs vary, and a dog's own behavior says more than its breed.
