Boxers come from late nineteenth-century Germany, where the Bullenbeisser, a hunting dog used to catch and hold boar and deer, was crossed with English Bulldogs. The result is a square, muscular working dog with a short, shiny coat in fawn or brindle, often with white markings, a black mask and a blunt muzzle. Adults typically weigh 50 to 80 pounds, and many dogs labeled Boxers are actually mixes.
Many Boxers are clownish and affectionate, greeting people with wiggles and leaps, and they stay puppyish for years. That energy suits a Muncie household with a fenced yard or easy access to the greenways, as long as someone provides daily exercise and patient, reward-based training. Their short face and thin coat make Indiana's icy winters and humid July afternoons something to plan for.
