The Belgian Malinois is the short-haired fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, a family that also includes the long-haired Groenendael and Tervuren and the rough-coated Laekenois. Named for the Mechelen region of Belgium, it's a lean, square dog with a black mask, erect ears and a weather-resistant double coat that sheds heavily twice a year. Most weigh 40 to 80 pounds, with females smaller than males.
Malinois were developed to herd and are now prized for police and military work, which says a lot about their drive, speed and focus. Many are devoted and sensitive, but a bored Malinois can turn frantic, destructive or reactive. In Indy, that means planning for daily running and training from the first week. Dogs vary, so spend time with a dog before deciding.
