The Yorkshire Terrier began as a working ratter in the mills and mines of nineteenth-century northern England, built from several small Scottish terriers. Adults are tiny, usually 4 to 8 pounds, with a fine, silky, steel-blue and tan coat that grows like human hair and sheds very little.
In Fort Wayne, that history shows up as a confident dog with a big voice. Many Yorkies are affectionate and lively, but they can bark at visitors, size up larger dogs and get hurt in rough play. Dental disease is common, so plan on tooth care, regular grooming and small, frequent meals for young dogs. Each Yorkie differs, so judge the dog in front of you rather than the breed's reputation.
