Pugs began as imperial court companions in China and reached Europe through Dutch traders, and they have been kept for company ever since. The modern Pug is a square, sturdy dog of about 14 to 18 pounds with a wrinkled face, dark eyes and a tail curled over the hip, usually fawn or black.
Many Pugs are playful, even-tempered and happiest underfoot, which suits a Springfield household where someone is home often. The flat face limits breathing in heat and during hard exercise, the short coat sheds heavily, and skin folds and eyes need regular care. Reported lifespans range from about 11 to 15 years, and keeping a Pug lean helps a great deal.
