French Bulldogs began as small English Bulldogs carried to France by lace workers in the 1800s, then crossed with local dogs and adopted as Parisian favorites. Americans later fixed the upright bat ears. A Frenchie is compact and muscular, usually 16 to 28 pounds, with a large square head, a short muzzle, loose wrinkled skin and a smooth coat in brindle, fawn, cream or white patterns.
Most are playful, affectionate and adaptable, and quieter than many breeds. The flat face brings breathing, heat, skin and spine problems, so health and budget deserve real thought. In Decatur that means watching humid summer afternoons and bitter winter mornings. Looks alone can't confirm ancestry, so a dog listed as a French Bulldog may be a mix. Judge each dog by how it breathes, moves and behaves.
